If you're hosting a gathering on your lot today, a few thoughtful practices go a long way toward ensuring everyone has a great time. Be mindful of your neighbors — especially those with young children, elderly family members, or pets who may be sensitive to loud noises. Keep gatherings at a reasonable volume and wind things down at a considerate hour. Dispose of trash properly and leave your lot clean at the end of the day.

Grilling Safety Reminders

• Keep your grill at least 10 feet away from your home, skirting, and any overhanging structure such as an awning or carport

• Never leave a lit grill unattended — fires can start and spread in seconds

• Keep children and pets safely away from the cooking area at all times

• Have a fire extinguisher, garden hose, or bucket of water nearby and easily accessible

• Allow charcoal to cool completely — at least 48 hours — before disposing of ash in a metal container

• Check propane connections for leaks before igniting a gas grill by applying soapy water to the hose and fittings
