🍂 Happy Columbus Day, Neighbors! What the Holiday Means for Your Week

Today, Monday, October 12, is Columbus Day — a federal holiday observed on the second Monday of October each year. Whether it's a day off for your household or just another Monday on the job, here's a little history, a few practical reminders that affect everyone, and some ideas for making the most of a beautiful fall day in our community. 👇

📖 A Bit of History

Columbus Day commemorates the arrival of Christopher Columbus in the Americas on October 12, 1492, when his three ships — the Niña, the Pinta, and the Santa María — made landfall in the Caribbean after more than two months at sea. The voyage connected two hemispheres and changed the course of world history.

The holiday itself has deep roots in American life. Celebrations date back to 1792, the 300th anniversary of the landing, and the day became especially meaningful to Italian-American communities, who embraced it as a celebration of their heritage and contributions to the country. Columbus Day was proclaimed a national observance in 1937 and became an official federal holiday in 1971, when it moved to its familiar second-Monday-of-October slot.

🌎 A Holiday with Many Names

You may also see today observed as Indigenous Peoples' Day — a recognition of the Native peoples who lived on these lands for thousands of years before 1492, and of their history, cultures, and contributions. A number of states and cities observe one, the other, or both. However your family marks the day, it's a meaningful moment to reflect on the full story of this land and everyone who has called it home. 🤝

📬 The Practical Stuff: What's Open and What's Closed

Because Columbus Day is a federal holiday, a few everyday services pause — plan your Monday accordingly:

1️⃣ No mail delivery. Post offices are closed and USPS does not deliver today — so don't worry if the mailbox is empty! Regular delivery resumes Tuesday. If you're expecting checks, statements, or important documents, expect them a day later than usual. 📭

2️⃣ Banks are closed. Most banks and credit unions observe the holiday. Deposits made today typically won't post until Tuesday, and any automatic payments scheduled for today may process the next business day. If rent or a bill payment is timed close to today, double-check your account so nothing lands late.

3️⃣ Government offices are closed. Federal offices, many state and county offices (including title branches and courthouses), and some libraries take the day off. If you had paperwork plans, aim for Tuesday.

4️⃣ Schools vary. Some districts are off today, others are in session — check your school's calendar so no one misses the bus (or waits for one that isn't coming!). 🚌

5️⃣ Stores and restaurants are mostly open — retail treats it as business as usual, and many run fall sales today.

🏘️ A Note on Community Services

Trash pickup schedules can shift by a day during federal holiday weeks depending on the hauler — if your collection day is early in the week, keep an eye out for any schedule notices. And as always, if you have a maintenance need today, reach out through the usual channels; genuine emergencies are handled every day of the year.

🍁 Making the Most of a Fall Monday

If you're lucky enough to have the day off, mid-October in the Midwest is about as good as it gets:

✅ Leaf-peeping drive or walk — Fall color is at or near its peak right now in much of Indiana, Ohio, and Kentucky. Even a walk around the neighborhood is a show this week. 🍁

✅ Visit an orchard or pumpkin patch — Apple cider, hayrides, and pumpkin picking are in full swing. It's prime season and a perfect family outing.

✅ Knock out fall home prep — A free Monday is a gift for the seasonal to-do list: clear leaves from the roof and gutters, check your skirting, test the furnace before the first cold snap, and swap in those smoke alarm batteries. (See our recent articles for step-by-step tips!)

✅ Cook something cozy — Chili, soup, or anything with cinnamon. It's the law of October. 😄🎃

✅ Simply rest — Long weekends exist for a reason. A porch chair, a warm drink, and October air is a fine way to spend a holiday.

🧡 From All of Us

However you spend today — working, resting, exploring, or raking — we hope it's a good one. Enjoy the beautiful season, look out for kids playing outside on their day off, and have a wonderful week, neighbors!

Happy Columbus Day! 🍂
