Free Fishing Day in Indiana

🎣 Free Fishing Day in Indiana — Saturday, September 26! Grab a Rod, No License Needed!
Attention all our Indiana neighbors — here's a fantastic (and completely FREE) way to spend a fall Saturday! 🍂
The Indiana Department of Natural Resources has designated Saturday, September 26, 2026 as the final Free Fishing Day of the year. On this one special day, Indiana residents can fish any of the state's public waters without a fishing license or trout/salmon stamp — no paperwork, no fees, no excuses. Just show up and fish! 🐟
🌟 What Exactly Is Free Fishing Day?
Each year, the Indiana DNR sets aside a handful of days when the usual license requirement is waived for all Hoosier residents. The idea is simple and wonderful: remove every barrier so that anyone — especially first-timers, kids, and families — can experience the joy of fishing without spending a dime on a license first.
September 26 is the last free day of 2026, so if you've been meaning to try it, this is your final chance of the year!
👨👩👧👦 Who Is This Perfect For?
✅ Families with kids — There are few better ways to unplug the tablets and make a real memory than a morning at the water with a bobber and a bucket of worms. Kids under 18 don't need a license any day of the year, and on Free Fishing Day, neither do the grown-ups!
✅ First-timers — Always been curious but never wanted to buy a license "just to see"? This day exists exactly for you.
✅ Longtime anglers — Already have your license? Free Fishing Day is the perfect excuse to invite someone along — a neighbor, a grandkid, a friend who's never held a rod. Share what you love!
✅ Anyone who needs a peaceful day — Cool September air, changing leaves, quiet water. Honestly, the fish are almost beside the point. 🍁
📋 The Important Fine Print
A few things to know before you cast:
1️⃣ Residents only. The license waiver applies to Indiana residents fishing Indiana public waters.
2️⃣ All other rules still apply. Free means free of the license — not free of the rules. Bag limits, size limits, and seasonal regulations remain fully in effect. Check the current rules at fishing.IN.gov before you go.
3️⃣ Public waters. The waiver covers Indiana's public waters — lakes, rivers, reservoirs, and DNR properties. Private ponds follow their owners' rules as always.
4️⃣ Bring the basics. A simple rod-and-reel combo, a small tackle box, some live bait or basic lures, sunscreen, water, and a chair or bucket to sit on. You genuinely don't need expensive gear to have a great day.
🗺️ Where to Go
Indiana is loaded with public fishing access — state park lakes, reservoirs, and river access points are found in nearly every county. To find waters near you, visit the DNR's fishing page at fishing.IN.gov, which includes maps of public access sites and any events being hosted at DNR properties that day. Many state properties host beginner-friendly events on Free Fishing Days — a great option if you'd like a little guidance your first time out.
🎒 Quick Tips for a Great Day
Go early or go late — fish bite best in the cooler hours of morning and evening.
Keep it simple for kids — bluegill near the bank with a worm under a bobber is fast action and big smiles.
Pack patience and snacks — the two most important items in any tackle box. 😄
Leave it cleaner than you found it — pack out your line, hooks, and trash. Discarded fishing line is dangerous for wildlife.
Snap a photo of the first catch! We'd love to see them — share your Free Fishing Day pictures in the comments! 📸
💙 Hooked? Keep It Going
If you discover you love it (careful — it happens fast!), an annual Indiana fishing license is valid through March 31, 2027, and can be purchased online at GoOutdoorsIN.com. License sales directly fund fish stocking, habitat restoration, water quality projects, and the public access sites we all enjoy — so buying one is a way of giving back to the waters, too. 🌊
🎉 Mark Your Calendar!
Saturday, September 26 — free fishing, statewide, all day. Round up the family, dust off the tackle box, and enjoy one of the best free outings Indiana has to offer. And to all our resident anglers: tight lines and good luck out there! 🎣🐠
